I recently had the chance to go ‘off the grid’ for seven days. It was awesome! The location was northern Quebec- a hunting/fishing camp. No hydro. No running water. Only propane fuel for lights, fridges, and stove. There was also an old cast iron stove that we used to heat the chalet (with wood) and cook on when the fire heated up the oven and iron top to a temperature we could cook on. Old fashion hand water pumps sucked the water into the camp from the lake and flushed out into a septic system. Life revolved around fishing, eating, conversation, and sleeping. Oh ya, I had never slept in queen sized bunk beds until this week!
I was surprised at how little I missed the amenities of civilization. I didn’t miss watching television, running to the store (which was 2 hours away), listening to the radio, using all my fancy cooking devices, electricity, or running water. Every morning I sat down and read a couple chapters of the Bible, prayed, enjoyed a coffee on the deck (which was 3 feet from the water), and observed God’s beautiful creation. We then ventured out on an aluminum boat and fished for 8-10 hours/day.
This trip did many things for me. Besides relaxing and clearing my mind from the busyness of church planting, pastoring, and life, God rejuvenated my spirit and mind. He helped me to see how His glory can fill my life. Everyday, I stood in awe of His awesomeness. Everyday I felt His love. Everyday I experienced peace. Everyday I got a greater understanding of His provisions. But, I also started to realize how our enemy does an excellent job at occupying our time, creating distractions, drawing our focus on everything but God.
I would encourage you to take the time everyday to seek God. Take the time to admire His beauty, handiwork, provisions, and love. Seek His love. There is plenty of His love to go around and fill your every desire and need. He longs for a deep relationship with you! He won’t let you down. If you seek Him, He will show up!
Don’t get distracted. Stay focused on Him! Make time to get to know Him through His Word (Bible) and prayer. This trip gave me a glimpse of how awesome Heaven will be and how having Him as our sole focus can fill every ounce of our soul. God is all you need. He’ll take care of you.
